Who this is for

Situations we handle every week.

Employees with a normal year

One or more W-2s, maybe a bit of interest and some student loan interest. Straightforward — and still worth having a person check for the credits software talks people out of.

Homeowners and itemisers

Mortgage interest, property tax, charitable giving and medical costs. We run it both ways every time and file whichever is genuinely better, not whichever is faster.

Freelance and 1099 income

Schedule C, the qualified business income deduction, self-employment tax, home office and vehicle — plus next year’s quarterly estimates so April stops being a shock.

Multi-state and remote workers

Moved during the year, worked remotely for an out-of-state employer, or kept a rental behind. Part-year and non-resident returns with the credits correctly claimed.

Included

What the fee covers.

Everything below is part of the flat price. Nothing on this list is an upsell you discover later, and if something does not apply to you it simply comes off the quote.

  • Federal Form 1040 and one state return, e-filed
  • A full credit and deduction review, not just the ones you thought to mention
  • Prior-year return read line by line for anything missed or carried forward
  • Carryforwards tracked: capital losses, passive losses, charitable, NOLs, basis
  • A plain-English review call before anything is transmitted
  • Free federal and state extension filing if you need more time
  • Electronic signature on Form 8879 — nothing printed, nothing posted
  • A permanent PDF copy of the return and every supporting schedule
  • IRS and state acceptance confirmed and sent to you in writing
  • Year-round answers to questions about the return we filed

A person reads your return. That is the whole difference.

Consumer tax software is genuinely good at arithmetic and genuinely bad at noticing. It cannot see that the 1099-NEC you entered as other income should have been on Schedule C with expenses against it. It will not ask why your state withholding is zero on a job you worked from another state. It happily accepts a rental with no depreciation and moves on.

We read the documents. When something does not reconcile — a broker statement missing cost basis, a K-1 that arrived with a footnote nobody explained, a 1099-K that double-counts income already on a 1099-NEC — we ask about it before it becomes a notice eighteen months later.

That is also why we ask for your prior-year return. Roughly a third of the new clients who send one have something worth recovering in it: a capital loss carryforward nobody tracked, an unclaimed education credit, a state credit for tax paid to another state, a Form 8606 that never got filed and turned a non-deductible IRA contribution into tax paid twice. When we find something worth amending, we tell you what it is worth before you decide.

What the flat fee actually means

You get a firm number in writing before any work starts, and that number does not move because your return took longer than we hoped. The only thing that changes a quote is a genuine change in scope — a business you did not mention, a second state, a stack of K-1s that arrives in September — and even then we stop, quote the difference in writing, and wait for you to approve it.

It also runs the other way. If you book the self-employed tier and it turns out your consulting income was a single 1099 with three expenses, we quote you down. We have no incentive to inflate the complexity of your year, because we are not billing by the hour.

Filing late, or not at all, is fixable

Unfiled returns are more common than most people realise and far less catastrophic than the anxiety suggests. The IRS is markedly easier to deal with when you come to it, and the failure-to-file penalty is ten times the failure-to-pay penalty — which means filing, even without paying, is almost always the right first move.

We pull your IRS wage and income transcripts to reconstruct what was actually reported about you, prepare the missing years in the right order so carryforwards flow correctly, and where the facts support it we request penalty relief. First-time abatement alone wipes the penalty for a lot of otherwise-compliant people, and it costs nothing to ask.

Questions

About individual tax preparation.

Can you file a return for a state I no longer live in?

Yes. Part-year resident and non-resident returns are routine for us, including the credit for tax paid to another state that stops you being taxed twice on the same income. Multi-state filers are one of the groups we see most, because it is exactly the situation consumer software handles worst.

What if I already filed and think something is wrong?

Send us the return. We read it at no charge and tell you honestly whether amending is worth it — sometimes it is not, and we will say so. If it is, an amended return where someone else prepared the original is $395, and we handle the correspondence that follows.

Do I need to send you original documents?

No. Clear photographs taken on your phone are fine for almost everything. You keep the originals; the IRS wants you to hold them for at least three years, and we will tell you which ones to keep longer.

How fast can you turn a return around?

Typically five to ten business days from the point your documents are complete, and often quicker outside the March-to-April crunch. An engagement started within ten days of a deadline carries a $250 rush fee, which we tell you about before you agree to anything.

Will you sign the return as the preparer?

Always. Every return we prepare for a fee is signed by a paid preparer holding a current IRS Preparer Tax Identification Number, as federal law requires. Anyone who prepares your return for money and refuses to sign it is doing something you should walk away from.
